Every day I get to go to work at such a great place. I work at the Timmins Family YMCA, I am an ECE apprentice there and I am also the cook. What a rewarding job! When I started out at the Y in October of 2010 I was hired as the temporary cook and a teacher. A few months later I was in the classroom all day which is what I truly wanted to do.
Recently I have gone back into the kitchen due to a lack of competent cooks. This time around I am truly enjoying it for some reason. I went to chef school so cooking comes easy to me. Creating meals for the children is great. The best part is sitting with the children while they enjoy their meal and hear them tell me how yummy it is, or seeing the picky eater of the class gobble it up and even better the stories the children tell me. For example the other day one little girl proceeded to tell me how “it’s dad that cooks at home and not mommy cause she’s not a good cook, mommy orders from the restaurant”.
The greetings I get as I enter each room to visit the children are heartwarming “Hi Tasha!” As a teacher in the toddler room simply hearing them say my name for the first time is awesome. I sometimes think about these kids and how I would love to know what kind of adult they will turn out to be in the future. For example one boy is so great at any physical activity or sport we play I am sure he will make it to the NHL one day. Hopefully he will be playing hockey for the Senators.
Teaching these children the platform for future learning in life is great. At circle time introducing a new subject to them like colors and then seeing them as they play say the color of an object properly is truly a rewarding moment. Watching as they grab a book we’ve read to them a bunch of times and hearing them repeat the book as they flip the pages pretending they are reading it to a doll or a friend is sooo cute. When the parents tell us that during the weekend their child pretended to call us to chat makes every moment spent in that building worth it.
I was talking to some of the girls at work today explaining how sometimes I feel like I am in the same position as a grandparent or aunt to these children; I get to have a fun time with them, sometimes spoiling them with candy..Shhh.. and then I send them home with their parents.
So even though I believe that everyone in my profession is severely underpaid, I do love getting up in the morning to go to work with all these awesome little people.
TaTa for Now
Love Tasha!
